In response to recent news and events
Councillor Garry Perry, Leader of Walsall Council, has released the below statement following recent national violence documented across the news
Dear All
I have been shocked and appalled, as I am sure you have, by what I have seen in the news this week.
The criminal acts of violent disorder that have taken place in other parts of the country are totally unacceptable. I support the swift and firm action that is being taken by the Police.
Here in Walsall we are proud of the strong links that we have with our communities. Our diversity is a great strength which we celebrate. In recent weeks, for example, we have been celebrating South Asian Heritage Month with events taking place in many parts of the borough. I am sure that thousands of people will come together to celebrate Walsall Pride 2024 in two weeks’ time.
It’s natural for people to have concerns about the current situation but be assured that we are working closely with colleagues from West Midlands Police and we are sharing information with our local and regional partners.
Walsall is blessed with strong, caring voluntary sector leaders and organisations that make a difference to our residents every day. Officers within our Resilient Communities team are in constant touch with them, listening to their concerns and observations and passing on accurate information.
There is certainly no room for complacency, but we have not seen any unrest here in Walsall and I am hopeful that continues to be the case.
There is an awful lot of misinformation and rumour being spread online. Please challenge what you see and hear and resist the temptation to spread it further.
Our Chief Executive Emma Bennett and the Executive Directors will update you on a regular basis. If at any time we receive information that suggests a disturbance is likely in the borough we will let you know immediately.
If you are aware of any information which you think might help, please contact West Midlands Police. Call 101, contact the Police on LiveChat, via the West Midlands Police website or through Crimestoppers.
Walsall is my home. The people of Walsall make this borough what it is today and together we are stronger now and for our future.
Best Wishes
